District Collector P. Venugopal said that a bio-gas plant would be set up for the treatment of waste generated at the ‘Oottupura' (dining hall-cum-kitchen), attached to the Sree Parathasarathy Temple complex at Aranmula, during the Vallasadya.

The Collector said that an official meeting held at the Collectorate conference hall here on Monday had decided to set up the plant at the land at Mandalakkuzhi allotted earlier to Vasthu Vidya Gurukulam.

Mr. Venugopal said Rs. 6 lakh earmarked for rural tourism project under the United Nations Development Programme would be utilised for setting up the plant. The plant would be commissioned before the next Vallasadya season, he said.

He said the Travancore Devaswom Board would make arrangements for the transfer of land presently in the possession of the Gurukulam. The plant would be set up with technical support of Kerala State Pollution Control Board (PCB).

The Collector directed ‘sadya' contractors to arrange for the removal and safe disposal of the waste generated at the Oottupura during this season's Vallasadya. PCB and Revenue officials would periodically inspect the waste disposal sites, he added. The Kozhencherry tahsildar would review the waste disposal mechanism at Aranmula during the Onam season.

H. Salimraj, Additional District Magistrate, M.C. Sarasamma, Revenue Divisional Officer, R. Ajayakumar, district panchayat member, and Thankachan Kakkanad, Aranmula grama panchayat president, attended the meeting.
