Bengali filmmaker Aparna Sen will deliver the 13th G. Aravindan lecture as part of this year’s International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK). The lecture, which is organised as a tribute to the versatile genius G. Aravindan, is into its 13th edition this year.

Aravindan, one of the forerunners of the parallel cinema movement, proved his mettle as a documentary filmmaker and cartoonist, before cementing his place in cinema. The country honoured him with Padma Shri in 1990. Aravindan Memorial lecture had its inception in 2006 with a lecture delivered by filmmaker Mani Kaul. Aparna Sen will deliver this year's lecture at the Nila theatre complex at 6 p.m. on December 10. She has excelled both as an actor in film and theatre and as director. Her first film appearance was in Satyajit Ray’s Teen Kanya (1961) when she was sixteen. Aparna Sen enacted the nuances of femininity of Bengali middle class under the direction of Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen.

1981 was a decisive year in Sen’s career when she switched to filmmaking with the film 36 Chowringhee Lane amidst her acting commitments. Being a multifaceted film personality, Sen defied all the conventions and categorizations in filmmaking with her sharp, but subtle depiction of female protagonists and their life as human entities. Her widely acclaimed works include Parama (1984), Sati (1989), Yugant (1995), Paromitar Ek Din (2000), Mr. and Mrs.Iyer (2002), ItiMrinalini (2011) and Chotushkone (2014).
