Low-lying areas got water-logged, roads were flooded, and traffic was thrown out of gear as heavy rain lashed Thiruvananthapuram through Wednesday afternoon.
Till evening, the city soaked in 15.77 mm of rain. The Met office said here that the airport alone received 44.8 mm. Similar weather is expected to continue till November 9.
A huge avenue tree that came crashing down in the heavy rain snapped power lines and obstructed the road near the Vijayamohini mill at Thirumala. Fire and Rescue Service personnel scrambled to cut away the fallen tree and restore traffic.
According to officials of the KSEB, power supply to the area was restored only after two to three hours. No other power outages were reported in the city due to the rain, KSEB officials said. This was mainly because the rains were not accompanied by gusts of strong winds, the officials added.
Traffic snarls were reported from different parts of the city as roads got waterlogged. The situation was particularly bad on the Peroorkada-Nedumangad stretch where traffic went bumper-to-bumper for more than an hour.
Motorists and pedestrians had a tough time negotiating the main road at East Fort, the Model School junction, and Thampanoor. Karimadom colony remained waterlogged for a few hours on Wednesday afternoon.
Plight of manholes
Many manholes of the Kerala Water Authority’s sewerage network in the city could be seen spouting water as the influx of rainwater into the network overloaded the ageing lines. Even though there was a surge in the water levels in the storm water canals in the city there were no reports of an overflow of water.
