Officials of the Legal Metrology Department initiated action against 100-odd vendors of meat, fish, and vegetables at Palayam and Pettah for possessing improper weighing scales and weights and levied a fine of Rs.44,000. The measures of 15 vendors were seized on Friday. The scales and weights that did not have the required seals were seized from 60 vendors. Similar equipment of 30 vegetable vendors were also seized.
While six vendors remitted the fine, legal action would be initiated against all the others, the press note said. Action was also initiated against 10 autorickshaw drivers who did not operate the fare meter during trips. Fourteen autos whose meters did not have the required seal were seized. A fine of Rs.28,000 was levied from these errant drivers, a press note said.
