Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan has urged the government to take over the land being illegally possessed by Harrisons Malayalam Plantations.
Mr. Achuthanandan said in a statement here on Friday that since the government had got legal advice to takeover the 60,000 acres of land being illegally possessed by the company, an Ordinance should be issued at the earliest.
Though there were no legal hassles in promulgating the Ordinance, the Cabinet had made certain lame excuses to escape the onus. This was aimed at helping the company and it would pave way to corruption, he said.
The land being occupied by the company constituted in 1983 had not been transferred to it, or tax remitted so far.
They were remitting tax in the name of the British company, Malayalam Plantations.
The committees appointed by the LDF government had found that there were no hitches in taking over the land and hence the government should issue the Ordinance soon, the Opposition leader said.
