Kerala Chief Minister Mr. V S Achuthanandan turned 87 on Tuesday, but for the CPI(M) veteran the birth day was sans any bash except the lunch with his family members at his official residence here.

The sole special menu on the birth day meal was a cup of 'vermicilly payasam' (a sweet) for Achuthanandan, according to his wife Vasumathy.

Known to lead a disciplined life, he woke up in the wee hours, rushed through the newspapers, had his exercises followed by a frugal breakfast. He then attended his office and the public engagements scheduled for the day.

When media persons called on him to greet, he said “You may rest your cameras and have a cup of payasam.”
