Humanities, the subjects that have increasingly got relegated to in the priorities of students and parents, was in special focus at the Government Model Girls Higher Secondary School, Pattom, on Tuesday.
“Humanities must have greater acceptance, as it enables us to take an informed look at how society moves forward,” said P.P. Prakashan, joint director, higher secondary education, while inaugurating Maanavikam 2017, a special programme to mark the Humanities Day observance held as part of World Population Day, at the school.
Dr. Prakashan said the Directorate of Higher Secondary Education was planning to organise similar programmes across the State. Given the undue importance being attached to engineering and medicine courses, there has to be a conscious effort to take higher education to newer directions. Humanities was an important area of study in prestigious institutions such as IITs and the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
Humanities are closely linked to science. These inter-connectivities should receive proper attention, he added. School principal Retnakumar, Rajeevan, chairman of school academic committee, and Imbichikkoya, joint director of examination, among others, spoke.
