A step closer to being a world-class station

Work on four escalators, three lifts, one foot overbridge, and a skywalk connecting the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus terminal at Thampanoor with the second entry of the Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station on Power House road were launched on Saturday, as part of the efforts to develop the station into a world-class one.

The work totalling Rs.6.6 crore comes close on the heels of introduction of automatic ticket vending machines (ATVM) and a new booking office at the busy station, the biggest railway station in the State.

Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development Shashi Tharoor inaugurated the work, in the presence of Rakesh Misra, General Manager Southern Railway; Rajesh Agrawal, Divisional Railway Manager; T. Kuppan, Additional Divisional Railway Manager; and senior officers.

Of the four escalators proposed, Mr. Agrawal said, two would come on the main platform and one each on two island platforms. A total of six escalators had been planned for the station.

The new foot overbridge would come up towards the Nagercoil side. The escalators and lifts will come in handy for passengers, especially senior citizens and physically challenged persons. The skywalk will benefit passengers as they can easily move from the railway station to the bus terminal complex coming up at Thampanoor.
