A Responsible Shopping Corridor (RSC) has been set up from Kesavadasapuram to East Fort in Thiruvananthapuram as part of the efforts to promote eco-conscious shopping.
Introduced as part of the ongoing Sixth Season Grand Kerala Shopping Festival (GKSF), the RSC was officially opened on Monday by the Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Shashi Tharoor.
A concept that is practiced in many countries worldwide, responsible shopping is something that we too must embrace, Dr Tharoor said.
Against child labour
The Union Minister also called for a boycott of products made by employing child labour. The country must adopt certification systems that other nations have put in place to avoid products of child labour. Lauding the responsible shopping drive, Dr. Tharoor said more efforts need to be taken to discourage use of plastic.
The RSC is a unique experiment to promote eco-conscious shopping in keeping with the State’s policy of promoting responsible tourism launched in key tourist destinations.
The RSC aims to encourage shoppers to spend their money on eco-friendly, organic and fair-price products not manufactured in sweatshops, encourage recycling, and work to improve civic and health amenities at stores and shopping centres.
