The Russian revolution, which shook the world out of its colonial and capitalist stupor, comes alive in vivid images at the exhibition that has been organised by the Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) at the Putharikkandam maidan in the city.
The exhibition, marking the centenary of the Russian revolution, features several snaps of Vladimir Lenin, each accompanied by a key quote from the contexts from which the pictures have been drawn. The exhibition also has several photographs, supported by text, underscoring the accomplishments of the USSR in the fields of education, health, science and technology, gender and socio-economic development. The exhibition is also critical of the collapse of the Soviet experiment, bringing in images of Joseph Stalin and ‘reform’ leaders Nikita Khrushchev and Mikhail Gorbachev.
Inaugurating the exhibition, SUCI State committee member S. Rajeevan said socialist ideology had much to offer to the world buffeted by repeated crises of capitalism.“The real socialist world is still possible, and exhibition like these, that seeks to bring back memories of the socialist revolution, will provide inspiration to many, ” he said.
The SUCI has organised several programmes, including seminars, poetry sessions, cultural gatherings, music programmes and film screenings as part of its centenary celebrations.
