June 27, 2012 09:53 am | Updated 09:53 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The PTP Avenue Residents’ Association on Tuesday launched a campaign for planting fruit-bearing trees in their locality. Deputy Mayor and PTP Nagar ward councillor G. Happykumar inaugurated the campaign by planting a sapling.

The association launched the campaign following the success of their earlier campaign of planting flowering trees and plants in their locality, a statement issued by the association said.

The former ward councillor K.C. Vikraman, association secretary Harish Kumar, organising secretary R. Harikumar, film director S. Janardhanan, Eshwara Chandran, Nina James, Lata Nair and Sindhu were present.

The statement added that the association had taken up the campaign to revive the natural beauty, greenery and serenity of the locality which were badly affected by issues of garbage disposal and stray-dog menace.

Inaugurating the campaign, Mr. Happykumar said that the city Corporation would extend all support to the association to deal with the garbage-management crisis.

Mr. Vikraman said that government departments should also take a proactive role in encouraging such activities taken up by residents’ associations.
