Property was rammed twice in one year

The Government Sanskrit High School at Fort here is in the grip of some serious injuries. Age had already sketched many long, gaping cracks on its walls, when a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus rammed the railing of its front staircase in October.

“A year ago, the same accident had happened. Then we used school funds to build the staircase. This accident occurred while the driver was trying to park the bus. This time, we wrote to the KSRTC officials. Action is yet to be taken,” said J. Jaya, the headmistress.

Motorists always ignore the ‘No Parking’ sign boldly displayed on the compound wall, she added.

The school does not have a rear compound wall and shares the area with the adjacent office building. “Lack of a compound wall and illegal parking pose danger to students. Authorities will realise its extent only when something happens to the children. Then, the school authorities will be blamed, though we have been making frequent representations to the authorities,” said a teacher.

The school is a haven for anti-social elements too. “Used alcohol bottles and undergarments usually welcome us in the mornings. The school is situated in a commercial area near the bus depot. If the compound wall is not raised, the plight will continue,” added Ms. Jaya.
