Writers all over the world have always been inspired by the potential of magic to enthral readers and keep them spellbound.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez weaved the spell of magical realism in his famous work, One Hundred Years of Solitude, and Vaikom Mohammed Basheer used magic in Mantra Charad. Magic also figured in the works of M.T. Vasudevan Nair and P. Kunhiraman Nair.

In a bid to chronicle the use of magic in literature, honorary director of the Magic Academy Chandrasenan Mithrumala has come up with a book introducing the magical contexts in 66 famous works in Malayalam and other languages. The book, titled Maayaaksharangal, was released at a function held here on Saturday.

Literateur George Onakkoor released the book by handing over a copy to V.N. Murali, general secretary of the Purogamana Kala Sahitya Sangham. Poet Neelamperoor Madhusoodanan Nair presided.

Magician Gopinath Muthukad and Lalithabai offered felicitations. Published by Mythri Books, Maayaaksharangal is priced at Rs.85. Muthukad, who used the power of magic in his short stories, has written the preface to the book.
