CPI(M) State Secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has criticised student organisations, including CPI-led AISF, which had persisted with their agitation at the Kerala Law Academy Law College even after the college management agreed to remove Ms. Lakshmi Nair as Principal on January 31.
This was done only to foment trouble and create fissures in the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), he said.
Addressing a CPI(M) rally at Peroorkada in the city on Monday, Mr. Balakrishnan said the understanding between the management and SFI leadership was that Ms. Nair would not remain Principal or have anything to do with conduct of examinations for five years. The complaint of the other student organisations was that the management had kept them out of the understanding. Although they had persisted with the strike on that ground, the final agreement based on which they withdrew the strike was no different from that arrived between the SFI leadership and the management. The decision to prolong the strike was not an innocent one. It was intended to occasion a police lathicharge and firing of teargas shells and cause bloodletting. That did not happen only because of the restraint shown by the police, he said.
The CPI(M) leader said the former BJP State president V. Muralidharan’s indefinite fast was intriguing as he was going out by car from the fast venue every night. He could go on with the fast for several days only because of that.
Local Congress MLA K. Muralidharan launched his fast thinking that he could follow the BJP leader’s example. The BJP bid was to lay a trap for the other parties and see if it could drive a wedge between the CPI(M) and CPI. Although that did not happen this time, similar attempts could be made in future, he reminded the party cadres and supporters.
