The Mahatma Gandhi University Syndicate on Saturday decided to rescind the affiliation of 21 colleges that have been sanctioned since 2012-13 that do not have basic infrastructure facilities.
The decision follows the recommendations of a Syndicate subcommittee appointed by the Syndicate at its sitting on July 10, 2016.
It has been asked to look into whether these institutions, numbering 60, sanctioned during the tenure of former syndicates nominated by the UDF government had fulfilled their obligations regarding the infrastructure and other facilities as delineated in the relevant Acts and statutes of the university and the directives of the UGC.
Meanwhile, the Syndicate, which met on Saturday, decided to extend one more chance to another 15 colleges on the list, found wanting in basic infrastructure, to fulfil their obligations. They would have to submit a report of completing their obligations by April 30, 2017, failing which their affiliation would stand cancelled with effect from the 2017-18 academic year.
The subcommittee, headed by P.K. Harikumar, has also sought an inquiry by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau into how such institutions, which had not fulfilled their obligations, managed to receive university affiliation.
Other members on the committee were K. Krishnadas, R. Pragash, P.K. Padmakumar, A. Jose and K. Sherafuddin.
