Preparatory to making Kerala’s higher education standards on a par with global standards, the government will initiate an infrastructure development drive in institutions of higher learning in the State, Education Minister C. Ravindranath has said.

According to a press note issued here, the government has set aside ₹538 crore for the purpose. He was speaking after inaugurating the library complex at Government College of Women here on Thursday. The library, spread over four floors, can accommodate one lakh books. An e-library system has also been put in place.

As part of the drive, all classrooms, libraries and laboratories would be made completely digital. In the next three to four years, academic standards in Kerala would match global standards, he said.

The mode of study that focusses on success in examinations and on gaining marks was now outdated. What was needed was for children to imbibe academic excellence through study that was research-oriented, he said. Kerala’s colleges were going to become arts-sports-culture complexes, he said.

The Minister also laid the foundation stone for the proposed English block at the college, the press note added.
