Parvathy Prakash, eighth standard student of NSS Karayogam HSS, Kottakkal, Malappuram, won the first prize in Kathakali music (HS girls) on her first attempt in the State School Arts Festival here on Saturday.

At the Government Town HSS, she sang rather well to leave a tough competition behind. A student of classical music under Sakambhari Kesavan, Parvathy picked up Kathakali sangeetham in less than a year from Kottakkal Santhosh.

Learning music along with mother Siji, who is a yoga teacher, Parvathy lives in a neighbourhood surrounded by musicians and Kathakali artistes near the Viswambhara temple of Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala.

Parvathy was excited about the support she got from AKMHSS, Kottoor, where she studied till last year.

Kottakkal Kesavan Kundalayar, PSV Natya Sangham principal who witnessed the event, said that most of the 19 competitors maintained good standard. “We could see promise in the students,” he said.

T.P. Nandana Nambiar from St. Teresa’s AIHSS, Kannur, and D.K. Sandra from KPRPHS, Kongad, Palakkad, won the second and third prizes respectively.
