The Rural Police on Thursday raided the Vellarada block panchayat office and arrested four persons, including the office peon, a 40-year-old woman, and a local leader of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), on the charge of violating the provisions of the Immoral Traffic Prevention Act.

Local residents besieged the office earlier in the day after noticing the presence of people in spite of it being a public holiday. The police entered the office in their presence and seized liquor, contraceptives, and cigarettes. The woman is a native of Adoor.

The police identified those arrested as Binu, 39, the office peon, Ratheesh, 25, DYFI unit member, and Vipin, 27, an auto-rickshaw driver. Investigators said it seemed the men often trespassed into the office on public holidays and misused the premises.

The suspects were produced before the local magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.

Assault: one held

The police arrested Saravan Chandra, a resident of Palode, on the charge of assaulting a woman and her daughter belonging to a tribal community. He was produced before the court on the charge of violating the provisions of the Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes Prevention of Atrocities Act and remanded in judicial custody for a period of 14 days.

Succumbs to injuries

Ratheesh, 32, who was seriously injured when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a public transport bus at Attingal on Monday, succumbed to his injuries at a hospital here on Thursday.
