Three girls drowned in a quarry pond at Munnamvila, Njarayilkonam, in Madavoor grama panchayat in the Pallickal police station limits on Sunday evening.

The girls were identified as Fathima Jumana (15), Shahana (18), and Sainaba (14), all cousins.

The incident occurred after 4 p.m., the Attingal Deputy Superintendent of Police said. The abandoned quarry was located on a piece of land owned by the girls’ family.

Raised an alarm

The police and the Fire and Rescue Services reached the spot after a girl who was with the drowned girls raised an alarm.

The girl told the authorities about the three.

The Pallickal police said the three were part of a five-member group that had gone to the quarry to play.

Rushed to help

The accident occurred when others rushed to help one of the girls who started drowning. The girls were together as the vacations were on, and there was a function in the family.

The bodies were shifted to the Parippally medical college hospital, the police said.
