3 students drown in Aruvikkara reservoir

First-year mechanical engineering diploma students

Three students who were trying to pose for photographs atop a rock at the Aruvikkara reservoir on Monday morning drowned in the reservoir after they slipped and fell in.

All three were first-year mechanical engineering diploma students of Government Polytechnic at Mancha, Nedumangad in the district.

The deceased were identified as Anujith (18), son of Sidharthan, Vanchiyoor, Attingal; Ajeesh (18), son of Anilkumar, Nedumparambu, Attingal; and Pramal (18), son of Prakash, Vanchiyoor, Attingal.

The students had come as a group of six to visit Aruvikkara at around 10.30 a.m. as their morning classes got cancelled. The three of them climbed atop the rock to be photographed. Pramal lost his footing and fell in first. Anujith and Ajeesh also fell in while trying to rescue Pramal.

Muddy waters

The local people were alerted to the incident following the cries of help by the other three students.

The police and Fire and Rescue Services personnel were alerted and though the local people initiated rescue efforts, the place where the students had fallen in was quite deep and muddy.

The bodies were recovered by around 12.45 p.m.
