The cyclone-triggered rain and wind caused heavy damage in the district and the total loss is ascertained to be around ₹50 lakh.
According to preliminary reports, damage to houses has been estimated at ₹26.60 lakh while the agriculture sector suffered a loss of ₹30.25 lakh. Nine houses were completely and 210 partially damaged and 270 people, including 40 children, from 65 families were moved to the four rescue camps in the district.
A total of 85 fishermen were rescued by the Fisheries Department and the Marine Enforcement. The majority of fishing boats that went to the sea from the Neendakara harbour in the past two days returned ashore. But two boats, Jitin and Binoy Mon, were hit by tidal waves. While the 11 crew members of Binoy Mon were rescued and shifted to Kollam, three from Jitin were admitted to the Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram.
The 15 crew members from St. Nicholas and Aswin were rescued while that of Velankanni Mata, which had been missing since Thursday, were found in Kochi and taken to Kollam.
A Marine Enforcement boat and a couple of fishing boats are continuing the rescue operations along the Kollam coast. Ambulance services and police personnel were deployed at all calamity-hit places in the district. Fire and Rescue Services personnel removed trees uprooted in heavy rain to restore traffic.
Ambulances from Kadakkal, Chavara, Punalur, Kollam, and Sasthamcotta transported around 60 people to various hospitals.
Over 100 Fire and Rescue Services personnel were engaged in rescue operations in the district for the past 48 hours.
