The ‘108' ambulance workers, through their selfless service, teach society about the value of life, Major Archbishop of the Syro Malankara Church Baselios Cleemis has said.
He was speaking at a function organised to felicitate the workers of the 108 Ambulance Services in the city on Saturday.
The service of the workers went beyond any religious or political motive, yet it was often overlooked, Baselios Cleemis said. But these workers, never caring about their own life or recognition they received, went about their work saving lives, he said, giving away mementos to the workers.
The function was organised by the St. Mary's Queen of Peace Basilica.
Inaugurating the function, K. Muraleedharan, MLA, said the selfless service of the workers helped save many lives and the felicitation was only a small recognition for their work.
Since its inception, the ambulance service had helped in many as 42,000 cases, including more than 35 pregnancy cases.
These workers faced many difficulties in the two years of their inception. In most of the complaints received against them, it was found that they always remained sincere to their work. Yet in many cases, the public treated them without any respect. This recognition would be an encouragement for the unit to continue their services despite all the hurdles, said Biju Prabhakar, Managing Director, Kerala Medical Services Corporation.
“The satisfaction that I get in this job is immense. When the society is honouring us this way, it is very encouraging and highly motivating,” said S. Pradeep, one of the 108 ambulance drivers from Attingal.
