Students in the city are proving that beyond the knowledge in textbooks, social literacy is integral to education.

As many as 10,000 students here have volunteered to take up a survey as part of the Aksharasree literacy and equivalency project being implemented by the Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority in the city Corporation limits.

The mission aims to link formal education with informal education to provide learners with a wholesome experience. Under the ₹4.51-crore project, those who are illiterate will be identified and provided education. Opportunities for further education will also be made available to those who were unable to continue their education.

The student are gearing up for the survey under the leadership of NSS volunteers in higher secondary schools and colleges in the city.

The survey will kick off at 8.30 a.m. on July 14 in all 100 wards of the Corporation. Codification of the survey details will be held the same day.

There are nearly 3.5 lakh households in the city.

The houses in each ward will be divided into clusters of 50 houses for the survey. Two students will be deployed for each cluster.

Special meetings will be called under the aegis of residents’ associations in the wards to familiarise the students with the conditions there.
