Health Minister V.S. Sivakumar has said that flats with all infrastructural necessities will be constructed for 1,000 families living in the Rajaji Nagar colony.

Mr. Sivakumar, who is also the local legislator, said that of the total 11.2 acres there, flats would be built on 5.26 acres.

A commercial complex would come upon the rest of the space.

Each flat was estimated to cost Rs.7 lakh.

Land to be raised

The land needed to be raised as it was a low-lying area and tended to get waterlogged during the monsoon. As the first phase, the area would be raised by 5m by the Urban Housing Mission, which would implement the project, he said.

The Kerala State Urban Housing Development Finance Corporation would fund the project.

During the construction phase, the families would be provided support to find temporary shelter.

Also, Rs.2 crore would be used from the MLA’s local area development fund to build a sewerage network there.

The decisions were made following an inspection of the area by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Mr. Sivakumar, and government officials.
