Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat will shortly begin “grama snehi”, a grievance redressing meeting at each zilla panchayat constituency, according to new president of the panchayat Asha Thimmappa Gowda.

Addressing presspersons after taking charge on Monday she said that the panchayat had 35 constituencies. Members representing the constituencies would preside over the “grama snehi”.

In addition, taluk panchayat members and gram panchayat members of each constituency would be invited to it.

She said that the panchayat would soon appoint nodal officers to each taluk, who would be responsible for arranging the “grama snehi”. Each nodal officer would be provided with two assisting officials.

The president said that the intervals of the “grama snehi” would be decided in a day or two. She said that from a minimum of seven gram panchayats to a maximum of 10 gram panchayats came under a zilla panchayat constituency.

The president said that after a few days of conducting the grievance redressal meeting a review meeting of officials would be conducted in each constituency to review whether instructions given in grievance redressal meetings have been adhered to.

The meeting would be presided over by president of the panchayat.

The vice-president of the panchayat and officials concerned of the constituency would have to attend it, she said.

The president said that a delegation of zilla panchayat members with three ministers of the district would meet the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah soon to urge him to sanction pending multi-village water supply projects to the district.

The vice-president Satish Kumpala said that of 20 multi-village water supply projects proposed in the district four have been sanctioned, all in Bantwal taluk.

Ms. Gowda said that the government sanctioned Rs. 20 lakh each to 21 gram panchayats during 2013-14 for solid waste management in their jurisdiction under Nirmal Bharat Abhiyana scheme. The fund was meant for converting solid waste into manure.

Of them a project in Uppinangady gram panchayat has been commissioned and another in Dharmasthala gram panchayat was coming up.

Fuel from plastic bags soon

Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat President Asha Thimmappa Gowda said on Monday that an entrepreneur in Bellare has shown interest to set up a factory of producing fuel from plastic bags. He has sought plastic bags from all gram panchayats in the district. The panchayat has reserved 1.60 acre land near Bellare for storing plastic bags collected.

It might take some months to set up the factory. Once it came up the panchayats would supply plastic to it. (EOM)
