The State Government has instituted an award for Yakshagana in the name of late Parthi Subba, who is considered as the father of this art form.
The annual award, carrying Rs. 1 lakh in cash, will be presented one artiste from 2010-11, according to B.R. Jayarama Raje Urs, Secretary, Departments of Kannada and Culture and Information.
In an informal chat with presspersons here on Sunday, Mr. Urs said that the Government issued an order to this effect a few days ago.
The honorary award for Yakshagana artistes being given by the Yakshagana Bayalata Academy would be continued, he said.
Later, Mr. Urs participated in the first honorary award presentation ceremony of the Karnataka Yakshagana Bayalata Academy at Dharmasthala on Sunday, where 20 artistes were presented with the award for 2008 and 2009. Each recipient of the award was given Rs. 10,000 in cash, a citation, a shawl and a memento.
