With the month of September being observed as “World Alzheimer’s month”, the Mangalore Alzheimer's Association (MAA) and the Kasturba Medical College (KMC) will organise a series of contests and discussions on Monday to discuss issues related to the debilitating mental illness.

The series of programmes are scheduled to start at 9 a.m. at ‘Sanjeevini hall’, KMC Hospital Attavara.

The day will begin with poster contest for college students on the theme, “Dementia- can we reduce the risk?”, in an effort to create awareness among the youth on the disease, said a release.

Meanwhile, the “Dementia Caregivers Forum” will be launched on the day. The forum will attempt to connect and share experiences between those taking care of patients of dementia and its related illnesses. A panel discussion on the matter will include Neurologists, Geriatrics doctors, Psychiatrists and social workers.

“Caregivers will be provided practical information and guidance by the authorities in the field… such programs will go a long way in meeting the needs of families taking care of Alzheimer’s patients,”' said Jerardin D'souza, Founder of MAA, in a release.

The afternoon will see experts delivering seminars on the various aspects of the disease. A release listed the sessions as: “'Perspectives and preventive measures in Dementia'' by P.T. Sivakumar, Additional Professor, NIMHANS, Bangalore; “The cognitive perspectives of Dementia” by Jamuna Rajeswaran, Additional Professor, Department of Clinical Psychology, NIMHANS; and, “Issues and Challenges in Dementia Care” by Prabha Adhikari, Head of Geriatrics, KMC.
