A 25-year-old worker is feared dead after he came under a heap of mud that caved in at the site of a road underbridge being constructed at the Padil-Bajal railway level crossing near here on Monday.

Fabrication work to prepare the ground for laying the foundation for the bridge was going on at a depth of about 30 ft below the ground level when the incident occurred.

According to eyewitness accounts, Mangal from Madhya Pradesh was trying to pull out other workers when a part of the earth caved in. He himself got trapped when a pile of mud fell on him. He is believed to be completely covered under mud.

In all, eight persons were working when the incident occurred, eyewitnesses said. They said that Mangal had joined work along with Namadeva, also from Madhya Pradesh, a few weeks ago. Fire and Emergency Services personnel were working under floodlights to remove mud, in their efforts to save the worker.
