The Bantwal rural police have arrested five persons, including a doctor, in connection with the death of woman owing to excessive bleeding after she was subjected to induced abortion.
Superintendent of Police Abhishek Goyal gave the names of the accused as Bhaskar Poojary, retired Taluk Medical Officer Hanumanth Rao, nurse Leela Karkera, private hospital helper Bharati Belchada and Lakshman Poojary.
The victim, Leelavati (34), died on September 6.
Found dead
Mr .Goyal said Leelavati was found dead near a lake at Panjakallu village in Bantwal taluk.
A post-mortem revealed that she was pregnant and her death was because of excessive bleeding.
Investigations revealed that her relative Bhaskar Poojary had an affair with her.
Learning that she was pregnant, Poojary took Leelavati to the retired Taluk Medical Officer, who prescribed medicines for induced abortion.
When Leelavati’s condition worsened, the retired Taluk Medical Officer referred her to Leela, a nurse at Minsa Hospital in Kankanady. Leela took Leelavati to the labour ward and carried out abortion.
She left for her house asking helper Bharati to take care of Leelavati, Mr. Goyal said.
Leelavati died of excessive bleeding in the hospital.
The accused managed to take the body from the hospital and dumped it near the lake at Panjakallu village.
