A woman was killed and four others injured after a speeding truck collided with their autorickshaw in Veerakhamba village, near Vittal on Monday afternoon. Kusuma (56), a resident of Kalenje, was killed, while Vishwanath, Jayanth, Harinakshi, and the autorickshaw driver Yatin suffered injuries. While Kusuma succumbed to injuries, Vittal Police station said the others were out of danger.
Around 1.15 p.m., the four were travelling in an autorickshaw from Kalladka towards Vittal when a speeding Kerala-registered truck, coming from the opposite direction rammed into them. Such was the impact that the autorickshaw toppled into a ditch, said the police. The driver of the truck has been arrested.
Suicide
Apparently depressed after having been diagnosed with cancer, a daily-wage worker hanged himself from a tree at Markanja, Sullia Taluk on Monday. Between 8.30 a.m. and 9.45 a.m., Chandrashekhar (47), who had been diagnosed six months ago, killed himself, said the Sullia police. He leaves behind two young children.
Gambling racket busted
Five persons were arrested for allegedly gambling in a reserve forest in Pattangady, Belthangady on Monday. Anu, Shankar, Sundar, Subba, and Sathosh Poojary were arrested by Belthangady police around 11.30 a.m. Rs. 820 was seized, said the police.
To catch a thief
In a case of turns and twists, a man from Rajasthan who literally struck gold in the city was finally caught, but not before he was robbed of all the 3.6 kg of the yellow metal.
The 21-year-old Sagar Gehlot had allegedly stolen 3.6 kg of gold ornaments on August 5 from jewellery maker Hasmukh Kimraz, a native of Mumbai, now settled in Mangalore. He was robbed of this stolen material in Gujarat. While Gujarat police arrested robbers, the Mangalore police tipped off their counterparts of Sagar’s alleged theft.
According to Bunder police, Sagar Gehlot worked as assistant to jewellery maker Hasmukh Kimraz. On August 5, Sagar Gehlot left Mangalore with gold brought by Hasmukh. The gold ornaments had been given by some jewellers in the city to Hasmukh for sending the same to his family jewellery-making unit in Mumbai for making designs.
The police said Hasmukh Kimraz filed a complaint about Sagar cheating him of gold ornaments. Hasmukh had suspected Sagar of being kidnapped for gold. As the police were searching, the police received information about Sagar filing a complaint with Navarangpur police in Gujarat of being robbed of gold. The Gujarat police arrested robbers and recovered 3.4 kg of gold ornaments.
A team of city police went to Navarangpur in Ahmedabad and arrested Sagar Gehlot. They recovered some gold ornaments from Gehlot. He was brought before the jurisdictional magistrate in Mangalore on Saturday, who remanded him to judicial custody till August 30.
