A woman, while holding her four-year-old daughter, jumped to death in an open well after allegedly being harassed by her husband and his relatives in Hosa Kaveri near Mulky on Sunday morning.
Around 10 a.m., Padmini (34), who had been married to Chandra (38) for the past five years, jumped into a well close to her residence while clutching her daughter Shivani, said the Mulky police. While Shivani was rescued by family members, Padmini died on the spot.
“The couple had been staying with Chandra’s younger brother Mohan and his wife Geeta. Apart from marital discord,
Padmini was constantly being harassed by her sister-in-law. Geeta is said to have repeatedly told Padmini that she had no place in the house,” said a police official.
Arrested
Soon after the incident, Chandra, Mohan, and Geeta were arrested by the police.
A case of harassment under Section 498(a) of the Indian Penal Code, comparing the harassment to dowry harassment, was filed against the three.
