Woman accuses in-laws of withholding husband

March 30, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - MANGALURU:

A 30-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman from different communities married in January, 2013.

Two years later, the man is allegedly missing and his wife has filed a complaint accusing his parents of keeping him in their custody.

Vijayalakshmi of Kumpala was at a meeting to redress the grievances of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes here on Sunday and she asked the police to bring her husband back to their house.

Vijayalakshmi married Swetan Kumar, also from Kumpala, at Arya Samaj in December 2012, and their marriage was registered on January 29, 2013. “We lived in Belthangady. His family was not happy with this marriage,” said Ms. Vijayalakshmi.

Ms. Vijalakshmi said that her husband, who ran a motorcycle showroom, called on March 12 asking her to go to her parents’ house in Kumpala, near Ullal, as he was proceeding to Bengaluru.

“When I returned few minutes later, his mobile phone was switched off. He has not returned home since then,” Ms. Vijayalakshmi said, breaking down.

Ms. Vijayalakshmi said that she filed a missing complaint with the Belthangady police on March 13 and then went to her in-laws’ house.

“His parents did not show any concern over their missing son. They abused me regarding my caste and sent me away,” she alleged.

She has filed a separate case with the Ullal police accusing her in-laws of defaming her on caste lines. Commissioner of Police S. Murugan told her that the police could not book the parents for kidnapping their son.

Meanwhile, Mr. Murugan directed the Ullal police to trace out Mr. Swetan Kumar and resolve the case.
