We will stand by our demand: St Aloysius College Alumni

B. Ramanath Rai urged to hold talks with parties

St. Aloysius College Alumni Association said it will stand by the demand for naming the road between Catholic Club and Ambedkar Circle after their college while being open to talks with District In-charge Minister B. Ramanath Rai.

Talking to reporters here on Friday, association president Archibald Menezes said the road stretch was named after the college during the college’s centenary celebration in 1979.

Then there were no system of notification for a road. Mr. Menezes claimed there were enough records with them to show that the road stretch was St. Aloysius College Road.

It was following representation by Vijay Bank Employees’ Association that the Mangaluru City Corporation passed the resolution in 2016 to name the road stretch after Mulky Sundar Rama Shetty, a former chairman and Managing Director of Vijaya Bank.

Though the Urban Development Department notified naming of the road on May 24, it kept the order in abeyance on July 1 that has now turned into a controversy. Mr. Rai has been asked to resolve issue amicably by holding talks with contentious parties.

A.M. Narahari, Registrar of St. Aloysius College, said members of Bunts Yane Nadavara Sangha, which was pressing for naming the road after Mulky Sundar Rama Shetty, were not attending meetings called by Mr. Rai.

“We are for talks and peaceful resolution of the issue,” Mr. Narahari said. If their demand was not accepted, the alumni would take legal recourse and carry out peaceful protests.
