A special meeting of the Mangaluru City Corporation council on Saturday declined to approve a ₹162-crore Asian Development Bank funded second stage water supply project to the city.
The councillors said that the consultant who prepared the detailed project report did not consult them on vital issues and the report was incomplete in several aspects.
Mayor Kavita Sanil asked the consultant to prepare a fresh report after consulting all the 60 councillors and place it before the council in November.
The project was being implemented on the loan provided by the ADB.
Strongly objecting to the mention in meeting’s agenda that the DPR was prepared in consultation with councillors of all the 60 wards, councillor Bhaskar Moily said the agency personnel had not spoken to any councillor.
Councillor Deepak Poojari said when works taken up in 2003 as a part of the first stage of the water supply project are still incomplete new works should not be taken up.
Mr. Poojari said water is yet to be supplied in many areas through the pipelines laid as a part of the first stage of the project.
Councillor Premanand Shetty said priority should be on resolving problems before taking up new works.
Councillor Roopa D. Bangera said citizens are yet to see 24-hour supply of water supply that was assured during the first stage of the project. Shashidhar Hegde said more funds can be sought to complete the pending works.
Earlier a representative from the consulting agency gave a presentation on new works proposed under the second stage of the project. Among the new works proposed include construction of eight new pump houses, having more clear water feeder mains and installation of new water meters.
