Water and electricity supply was hit in several parts of Dakshina Kannada, including Mangalore, following high-speed wind and lightning since Sunday evening.
The Indian Meteorological Department said strong wind flowing from east to west direction were likely to prevail for the next 48 hours in the coast.
Water supply was affected in several parts of the city on Monday following disruption in power supply to Thumbe pumping station on Sunday night.
Mangalore City Corporation Commissioner Ajith Kumar Hegde said power supply to the Thumbe water pumping station was disrupted at around 10 p.m. “Power supply is being restored.
Water supply will start in some areas tonight. It will be normal (water supply) tomorrow,” Mr. Hegde told The Hindu on Monday.
Managing Director of Mangalore Electricity Supply Company M. Govindappa said because of gale-force winds Sunday night, a 110 kV tower was uprooted at Killur. “Power supply was interrupted in Bantwal, Konaje, Nelyadi and other areas,” he said.
Around 1 a.m. on Monday, electricity was sourced from Kerala to feed into Konaje, while around 8.30 a.m. power was restored to Bantwal town from Kulashekar side. “In this time, the drinking water supply was affected as power to the pumping stations was cut. This has been restored since morning,” he said.
However, it will take a little more than four days to replace the fallen tower, as a fresh concrete base had to be built, said Mr. Govindappa. Until then, the internal arrangement of supplying power from Kerala or Kulashekhar will continue, he said.
Narrow escape
It was a narrow escape for Gangayya Poojary and six family members in Killur near Kavoor. According to eyewitness accounts, the tower supporting high tension lines fell on the tiled-roof of Mr. Poojary’s house. His family members and he took shelter in their neighbour’s house. Health Minister U.T. Khader visited his house on Monday.
Three poles were damaged near Gandhi Park in Mannagudda resulting in the disruption of power supply in the area on Monday. There was intermittent power supply in several parts of the city.
The Mescom Control Room (1097) received more than 3000 phone calls for 34 instances of power outages in the district.
The main power supply in Puttur and Sullia was disrupted while trees fell on poles in Padil and Panambur.
An electric pole was uprooted in Siddakatte in Bantwal taluk and electric lines were cut off in Kottara and Gurupura Kaikamba. The power supply was restored in these areas Monday morning.
