Venkatesh Rao to be given Sheni Award

MANGALORE: Yakshagana artiste Jalavalli Venkatesh Rao who has been chosen for Sheni Award for 2010.

Sheni Gopalakrishna Bhat Charitable Trust, Surathkal,will organise a three-day programme from July 9 to mark the decennial year of the ‘Sheni Award' given by it to Yakshagana artistes.

The award, named after the doyen of Yakshagana late Sheni Gopalakrishna Bhat, was first presented in 2001 to Balipa Narayana Bhagawath. The trust has chosen Jalavalli Venkatesh Rao, a veteran Yakshagana artiste, for the award this year. The award comprises Rs. 15,000 in cash and a citation.

President of the trust Harikrishna Punaroor said in a release that the three-day programme, “Yakshagana Parva”, will be held at Govindadasa College at Surathkal.

On Friday, there will be a Yakshagana talamaddale “Tamradhwaja kalaga” by veteran artistes. Kumble Sundar Rao, president, Karnataka Yakshagana Bayalatta Academy, will inaugurate the Yakshagana Parva. Yakshagana bayalatta “Jatayu Moksha” will be staged by students of MGM Yakshagana Kendra, Udupi, after the inaugural function.

A discussion on ‘Killing of Vali' will be held on July 10.

This will be followed by another discussion on singing tradition in Yakshagana. Veteran “bhagawathars” (singers) like Balipa Narayana, Puttige Raghurama Holla, Kubanoor Sridhara Rao, Leelavathi Baipadithya and others will participate in it.
