Vedike demands action against prayer hall attackers

It also demands probe into Kaup moral policing episode

March 20, 2013 01:04 pm | Updated 01:04 pm IST - Udupi:

Activists of the Udupi district unit of Karnataka Komu Sauharda Vedike (KKSV) staged a dharna here on Tuesday protesting against the attack on a Christian prayer hall allegedly by activists of Bajrang Dal earlier this month. They also condemned the last week’s incident of moral policing where two Hindu boys were thrashed by a group of Muslim youths at Kaup.

Addressing the protesters gathered at the Service Bus Stand, writer G. Rajashekhar said the attack on seven people gathered at the prayer hall by a group of nearly 50 people was a shameful act. “People who attended the prayer at the prayer hall on March 8 did so because they felt that their problems got solved by praying there. This is not an illegal or an unconstitutional act,” he said.

“The attack was part of a fascist agenda being followed by some reactionary groups throughout the country,” he said.

He expressed surprise that the 19 accused in the attack case got bail within a day. The police should also arrest others who were involved in the attack, he said.

Mr. Rajashekhar, who is also the district unit president of the KKSV, called for an impartial probe into the Kaup incident. “All the accused in the case should be arrested and effective steps should be taken to prevent incidents of moral policing,” he said.
