August 07, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 09:46 am IST - MANGALURU:

With just a day remaining for counselling to begin for the admissions of students to postgraduate courses of Mangalore University for 2016-17, the varsity is set to make admissions on the basis of provisional mark sheets, probably for the first time.

It is because the original mark sheets of final (sixth) semester examinations of undergraduate courses have not been issued to all students exposing the university which has been accredited with ‘A’ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

Senior professors at the university told The Hindu that it was unprecedented. In previous years, the university made admissions on the basis of original mark sheets. It was for the first time a situation has arisen to make admissions on the basis of provisional mark sheets.

The counselling for admissions would begin from Monday and end on August 16.

Circular

In a circular dated August 5, 2016 e-mailed to the postgraduate departments the Registrar (Evaluation) said, “All chairmen/co-ordinators of postgraduate departments/principals of colleges offering postgraduate courses are requested to accept the provisional marks card of students downloaded from the website for post graduate admissions. The original marks card will be sent to the college in a few days and the students will produce them at the time of counselling.”

The circular has been sent when only three days remaining (with August 7 being Sunday) for the counselling to begin. It made it clear that the original mark sheets had not been sent to the colleges and “will be sent in a few days”.

Some professors questioned how students could produce the original mark sheets in the counselling beginning from August 8. Some principals have refused to sign the provisional marks as they are not authentic.

Registrar (Administration) K.M. Lokesh told The Hindu that if principals did not sign the provisional mark sheets, they would be cross checked with the marks recorded in the university system.

A help desk would be set up for the purpose. Chairpersons of departments would be briefed and make admissions after verifying the marks in the university system. Original mark sheets would be verified again later with the provisional mark sheets produced during the time of admissions.

Originals

He said that students attending counselling on Monday and Tuesday for Commerce and Management streams unlikely to get original mark sheets. Other students are likely to get them.
