Mangalore University has refused to recognise three colleges in the city to offer Ph.D. programmes in management or business management.
They are: St. Aloysius College, A.J. Institute of Management, and Srinivas Institute of Management.
St. Aloysius College, an autonomous college under the university, sought to become a “Research Centre in Business Management for Ph.D. programme of Mangalore University”. The other two sought affiliation for 2012-13 to start Ph.D. programmes in management. The university has refused to allow the Government First Grade College, Vittal, to start a postgraduate course in Commerce and any B.Sc. course for 2012-13.
The Principal of St. Aloysius College through a letter of January 20, 2011 had requested the university to recognise the college as a “Research Centre in Business Management for Ph.D. programme in Mangalore University”. An inspection committee of the university, which visited the college, submitted a report to the university on May 26, not favouring the recognition citing certain lapses. The Syndicate, the highest decision making body of the university, in its meeting on May 30, endorsed the report of the committee and did not agree to grant recognition.
A June 13, 2012 letter by the Registrar (administration) of the university to the Principal of the college cited reasons for not granting the recognition.
It said that books and journals in the college library were not focused on research in management area and the data bases were insufficient for research activities. It said that research papers of staff were not published in reputed/referred journals. Meanwhile, the Academic Council of the university at its meeting on July 2 refused to grant affiliation for Ph.D. programme in management in A.J. Institute of Management and Srinivas Institute of Management. A local inquiry committee of the university which visited the two institutes on April 21, 2012 recommended the university not to grant affiliation. In two separate reports, the committee pointed out the inadequate physical infrastructure facilities and books in their libraries for research. Another local inquiry committee which visited the Government Degree College at Vittal on April 10, pointed out at the lack of facilities to start M.Com. and any B.Sc. course.
