Following a year-long hardship for motorists negotiating uneven stretches between Valencia and Nandigudda Circle resulting in accidents, the Mangalore City Corporation has finally taken up work to set it right.

For the past one week, the corporation personnel had been digging a portion of the road that has subsided at several places along the road. “We have taken up the work of levelling these portions,” said the Commissioner Harish Kumar K. The corporation would concrete the damaged portion, he added.

The work has been taken up following complaints from residents about increasing number of accidents, especially involving two-wheelers, on this busy two-lane concrete road. The accidents had been occurring while negotiating the ditches at several places on the road earmarked for median.

“There are nearly five accidents every week. It has become a routine for us to shift the injured to the hospital,” said a mechanic working in an automobile workshop near Nandigudda Circle.

R. Clive, a resident of Valencia, said these ditches had been on the road for more than a year.

“It becomes difficult for two-wheeler riders to negotiate these uneven surfaces, more so during the monsoon when water filled these portions.” Mr. Clive said a 20-year-old motorcyclist suffered fracture after falling off his motorcycle near the State Bank of India branch two weeks ago. The residents had been having problems on this road stretch, which had been concreted at a cost of Rs. 5 crore in December 2010.
