If District In-charge Minister B. Ramanath Rai has his way, Urwa Store could emerge as a hub of official activity with the office of the Deputy Commissioner being part of it. A cultural hall and a multi-storeyed complex for government employees are also in the proposal.
During a meeting chaired by Mr. Rai here on Saturday, a Karnataka Housing Board executive said the new office complex would come up on 30 acres of land next to Zilla Panchayat where 219 government quarters are located.
By bringing down these dilapidated structures, the government could have the district complex, Ambdekar Bhavan, cultural hall and a multi-storeyed residential complex.
The KHB executive said land is also available at Bangra Kuloor. However, Mangalore South MLA J.R. Lobo said it would not be ideal to have the district complex on the land close to a storm water drain.
Mr. Rai said it would be better to have the district complex in Urwa Store area. He said residents of 219 quarters would be happy to move into newly-constructed flats.
Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim said the new quarters would require around Rs. 200 crore. Mr. Rai asked the KHB executive to be the convenor of the committee to decide on the location for the district complex. A report would be submitted in a week.
Mr. Rai and Health Minister U.T. Khader were critical of Deputy Director of Food and Civil Supplies C.S. Sharanabasappa for failure to issue kerosene to all fishermen operating boats, following a complaint by a fisherman.
