Birth anniversary of the former Chief Minister celebrated

Raghupati Bhat, MLA, said on Saturday that the former Chief Minister D. Devaraj Urs had brought about a social and economic revolution in the State by enacting the Land Reforms Act.

He was speaking at the 96th birth anniversary celebrations of late D. Devaraj Urs organised by the district administration and zilla panchayat, here.

Mr. Bhat said that the Land Reforms Act had been effectively implemented in the districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada. If the Act had not been enacted, a large number of people would have remained as bonded labourers. This Act made the tillers the owners of land”, he said.

“Though many Chief Ministers have come and gone, people still remember Urs because of his path-breaking work,” he said.

Many people from backward classes got into politics only because they were inspired by Urs, Mr. Bhat said.

President of Udupi City Municipal Council Kiran Kumar hoped that especially after the Anna Hazare movement, the country would get good leaders like Devaraj Urs.

Head of the Department of Kannada at Government First Grade College Gananath Yekkar said that students should read books on the life and achievements of Devaraj Urs and recommended the book authored by journalist late Vaddarse Raghuram Shetty on Urs.

But Urs had to endure lot of negative propaganda because of the Land Reforms Act. Even the media did not highlight his achievements as it should have, Mr. Yekkar said.

President of ZP Katapady Shankar Poojary, Deputy Commissioner M.T. Reju, Chief Executive Officer of ZP Prabhakar Sharma, Deputy Secretary Pranesh Rao, Zilla Panchayat member Upendra Nayak, were present on the occasiion.
