UPA achieved only scams: Shobha Karandlaje

March 15, 2014 10:30 am | Updated May 19, 2016 08:52 am IST - Udupi:

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Shobha Karandlaje said on Friday that the only achievement of the 10-year-old United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government was a litany of scams.

Addressing presspersons here, Ms. Karandlaje said the people were fed up with scams such as those involving the 2G spectrum allocation, the Commonwealth Games or coal allocation.

As Energy Minister in the previous State government, she had made 10 representations to the Centre urging it to allocate coal to the State to tide over the power crisis. However, the Centre had turned a deaf ear to them and instead allocated coal to private companies, she said.

The security situation in the country too had worsened under the UPA rule, she said. “The people of the country want a change. They see this change in Narendra Modi,” Ms. Karandlaje said.

The Siddharamaiah government had little to show in terms of achievements, she said, adding that it was also closing down many welfare schemes started by the previous BJP government.

Atrocities against women were increasing throughout the country. “It is necessary to bring in tough laws to deal with such atrocities. A law should be passed to castrate men who are proved to be involved in attacking women,” Ms. Karandlaje said.

Earlier, she inaugurated the party’s campaign office in Kaup.
