1,270 students from 49 colleges will participate in the three-day event from Monday

Mangalagangothri campus of Mangalore University will witness myriad cultural activities as students from its affiliated colleges are set to unleash their creativity for three days beginning September 3.

The inter-collegiate cultural festival will attract 1,270 students from 49 colleges, Vice-Chancellor T.C. Shivashankara Murthy told presspersons here on Friday.

He said there would be 25 competitions in music, dance, theatre, literature, and fine arts categories.

The competitions were hitherto conducted in five different colleges affiliated to the university over a month. For the first time, the competitions are taking the shape of a cultural festival and being brought on the university’s campus.

He said the competitions would be held at Mangala Auditorium, Yakshagana Kala Kendra, Old Senate Hall, MBA Seminar Hall, Commerce Hall, and Humanities Block on the campus.

The competitions listed under music include classical vocal solo (Carnatic or Hindustani); classical instrumental solo (percussion); classical instrumental solo (non-percussion); light vocal (Indian); Western vocal (solo); Indian and Western group song; and folk orchestra.

Under dance, folk/tribal and classical dance competitions will be held. Literary competitions include quiz, elocution, debate in Kannada, and English.

The theatre competitions include one act play, skits, mime, and mimicry.

Under the fine arts category, there will be on-the-spot painting, collage, poster-making, clay modelling, cartooning, rangoli and spot photography competitions.

Senior Yakshagana artiste Padmashree Chittani Rmachandra Hegde will inaugurate the competitions.

President of Karnataka Yakshagana Bayalata Academy M. L. Samaga will be the chief guest of the valedictory function on September 5.

Prize

Prof. Murthy said that the university team secured the first prize in theatre and individual first prize in classical dance competitions at the south zone youth festival held recently. The university team was the overall champion in the theatre event in the south zone youth festival held in 2010-11.
