Small-scale industries in Udupi will get a fillip if the plan to develop three industrial areas in the district by the District Industries Centre (DIC) comes to fruition.
The three industrial areas will come up on 60 acres of land in Belapu; on 220 acres in Yembattu Badagabettu village and on 68 acres in Nandikur. The land acquisition work has been completed in Belapu, where a Detailed Survey Project (DSP) is under way. It will take a year for the government to put in place basic infrastructures like roads, electricity, water, drainage system and civic amenities.
According to P. Nagesh, Joint Director of the DIC, 20 acres of the land in Belapu would be used to develop basic amenities. The land would be allotted to about 40 small scale units within six months of developing the infrastructure.
The DIC has sent a proposal to acquire 220 acres at Yembattu Badagabettu to the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB).
The land acquisition work would take at least nine months and development of basic infrastructure on the land would take as many months. Of the 220 acres of land, 132 acres would be available for allotment and nearly 160 small industrial units were expected to come up there.
As many as 50 industrial units would come up in the industrial area in Nandikur village. “We have received 14 applications from entrepreneurs seeking plots in the Nandikur industrial area,” Mr. Nagesh said.
The construction of a Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) was compulsory in every industrial area. The CETP would require about 20 to 25 acres of land.
Proposals
In addition to these industrial areas, the DIC had sent three proposals to the government to set up industrial estates in Brahmavar, Padur and Perdoor in Udupi taluk, Hebri-Shivapura in Karkala taluk, and Mullikatte, Halady and Byndoor in Kundapur taluk, to the Karnataka State Small Industries Development Corporation (KSSIDC). The setting up of these industrial estates would require 25 to 50 acres of land.
“The objective is to provide industrial plots to entrepreneurs close to their own places. It will also stop migration of skilled workers from the district,” Mr. Nagesh said.
Clusters
The DIC is also promoting a printing cluster, a cashew cluster and a gold artisans’ cluster in Udupi, and a stone artisans’ cluster in Karkala. “There are 400 goldsmiths in and around Udupi.
They can come together and form a cluster. By forming a cluster, they can avail government subsidy. But the plans are still in infancy,” Mr. Nagesh said.
At present there are 250 small printing units which do not have modern multi-colour printing machines. Most of the multi-media and colour printing works are now done either in Mangalore or in Bangalore.
The small printing units have already formed a Special Purpose Vehicle called Udupi Mudranalaya so that they could take up multi-media colour printing here.
