Udupi city may get Varahi water

Sorake says he will discuss with experts on the plan

May 26, 2013 01:03 pm | Updated 01:03 pm IST - Udupi:

Vinay Kumar Sorake, Urban Development Minister, said on Saturday that a plan will be prepared to supply water to Udupi city from Varahi River. He was speaking after inaugurating the office of Udupi MLA Pramod Madhwaraj here.

Mr. Sorake said he would be speaking to experts shortly on the issue of supplying Varahi River water to the city. Presently, water was being supplied to the city from the Swarna River. But there were problems of water shortage during summers. This could be dealt with by supplying water from the Varahi river. “Efforts will be made to make Udupi municipality a model municipality in the State”, he said.

There was also water scarcity in some villages in the district.

There were 13 rivers flowing in the district. Hence water from these rivers could be lifted and supplied to these villages under Multi-Village Drinking Water Scheme.

Presiding over the function, Mr. Madhwaraj said efforts would be made to extend underground drainage system to those parts of Udupi city, which did not have them.
