District Health and Family Welfare Officer Ramachandra Bairy said on Thursday that 675 cases of malaria had been recorded in the district from January to July this year.
Dr. Bairy was speaking at the monthly Karnataka Development Programme (KDP) review meeting held at the zilla panchayat here.
He said said 411 cases of tuberculosis had been recorded in the district this year till the end of July. Precautionary steps had been taken by the department to prevent the spread of malaria in the district, he said.
Udupi Zilla Panchayat vice-president Jyoti S. Shetty said 2,000 houses had been sanctioned under the Basava Housing Scheme for Karkala taluk. Already six houses had been built under the scheme, while 348 houses were in various stages of construction. An amount of Rs. 54 lakh had been released under the Basava Housing Scheme for 2011-12. As many as 394 houses had been upgraded under the Indira Awaas Yojana while 258 houses had been sanctioned by Rajiv Gandhi Housing Corporation, Ms. Shetty said.
Chief Executive Officer of zilla panchayat S.A. Prabhakar Sharma directed the officers of the Department of Public Instruction to provide travelling allowance to students coming from far-flung rural areas based on their need.
Joint Director of Agriculture B.Y. Srinivas said the target for sowing was 48,200 hectares of land in the district. Already, sowing activity had taken place in 47,310 hectares. The government had supplied 3,140 tonnes of fertilizers to the department, he said.
Chairman of the zilla panchayat Standing Committee on Education and Health K. Babu, Chairman of zilla panchayat Standing Committee on Social Justice Upendra Nayak, Deputy Secretary D. Pranesh Rao, Chief Planning Officer Vijaykumar Shetty and Chief Accounts Officer Thimappa were present.
