Two women die of burns in Karnataka

A 34-year-woman died of burns after she reportedly set herself on fire in Sullia police station limits on Friday.

The Sullia police said Pushpakala had been staying with her mother in Ivannadu village as she was not well. She returned to her husband’s house in Solangeri on December 22 after her husband, who works in Kerala, came back. Pushapkala was reportedly abused by her niece Vasanti.

The police said Pushpakala returned to her mother’s house on December 24 and reportedly set herself on fire. Neighbours took her to a private hospital in Mangaluru where she died on Friday.

Pushpakala’s mother has filed a complaint against Vasanti, the police said.

In another incident, Sujatha, 20 died of burns while trying to light a kerosene stove on Friday. She died in a private hospital in Mangaluru, the police said.

Theft in Karkala temple

Thieves decamped with three small silver idols of deities and silver ornaments used to decorate deities at Sri Krishna Kshetra Temple in Karkala. The value of the stolen valuables is estimated at Rs. 2.35 lakh.

The police said thieves broke into the temple between 8.30 p.m. on December 25 and 5.30 a.m. on December 26.

They also stole Rs. 15,000 from four ‘hundis’ at the temple. A case had been registered at Karkala Town Police Station.
