In a glitzy function held here on Sunday, Florine Pinto from Perne in Bantwal taluk became the first woman to win in Agriculturist of The Year category at the Rachana Awards.
A progressive farmer cultivating coconut, paddy, areca among others on her 20-acre plot, Ms. Pinto joins Hilda Rayappan, who won in “woman of the year ” category for her contributions towards de-addiction in the city; Walter D’Souza, who won in “entrepreneur of the year” category for his cashew-import business and for his contributions as the Chairman of (Southern Region) Federation of Indian Export Organisations; architect Oscar G. Concessao who won in “professional of the year” category, and founder of Fortuna Engineering Works Mark Denis D'Souza who won in “NRI entrepreneur of the year” category.
The award-winner were selected by a five-member jury.
Rachana Awards were set up in 1992 to honour extraordinary persons from the Catholic community. Mangalore Bishop Aloysius Paul D’Souza and chairman of rehabilitation, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, Ian Cardoza, were present at the awards.
