Two friends drown off NIT-K beach

Two youths drowned after fierce waves dragged into the sea off NIT-K beach at Surathkal on Sunday. Around 3.30 p.m., Sriram (22) and Ashwin (24) were sitting on the rocks at the beach with their friends Muthulingam when a wave pulled Ashwin into the sea, said Surathkal Police. Sriram jumped into the sea to rescue his friend, and soon they lost sight of him, added the police. Their bodies washed ashore a half hour later. Sriram worked as a sales executive and Ashwin was a crane operator, said a police officer. The two friends were residents of Kulai, and children of daily-wage labourers, said the police.

‘Criminal’ arrested

A man with criminal antecedents was arrested on Saturday for brandishing an unlicensed pistol on a public road at Monkeystand near Mangaladevi Temple. Mangalore South Police said Surya Kumar (30), from Sonnekoppa, who has various cases of murder and attempt to murder against him in the city, was arrested.

Motorcyclist killed

One person was killed and two others injured after an autorickshaw collided with their motorcycle at Vittal on Sunday afternoon. Around 2.30 p.m. Sujith Kumar (19) was riding pillion with Dinesh and Harish on the motorcycle, when an oncoming autorickshaw, driven by Narayan, rammed into them, said Vittal Police. While Sujith died on the way to the hospital, the other two suffered minor injuries. Sujith was a resident of Kepu nearby, and was working as a daily-wage labourer, said the police, who added that none of the three were wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

Succumbs to injuries

Guruva (65), who had suffered injuries after a motorcycle rammed into him while walking at Golikatte, near Vittal, two weeks ago succumbed to his injuries on Saturday evening, said the Vittal police. He had been admitted to a hospital after the motorcycle, steered by Chandrashekar, rammed into him on February 1.

Man slips to death

Veerappa Malekudiya (45) who slipped and fell from a tree while collecting pepper at his farm at Neriya succumbed to his injuries late on Saturday, said the Belthangady police.

Gamblers arrested

A total of seven people were arrested for gambling at Karimanalu village in Belthangady taluk around midnight on Saturday, said Venoor police.
